But you can't pick your family. Or at least that's how the saying goes.
Truthfully, growing up I didn't spend much time with my mother's side of the family. We spent more time with my Dads parents and only saw our grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles from my moms side once or twice a year. As we got older, it became even further in between sightings.
A few weeks ago, my cousin Cathy sent me a facebook message indicating that Claire (who I don't think I had seen since she was 3) needed headshots for her college applications and that they would love for me to do them. I could hardly believe that Claire was 17 or 18, much less that she was going off to college!
This past weekend, I made the three hour trek up to Massachusetts to visit my family. We scheduled the shoot on Saturday thinking that the weather would be perfect and the shoot would go of without a hitch. When I woke up on Saturday morning, not only was the weather not perfect but it was pouring! I was so upset - my first real interaction with Claire in years and it was already a mess.
They got to my parents house right around 1pm, Cathy was first up the stairs and right behind her was this beautiful girl that I wouldn't have recognized if she walked right into me. Luck was on our side because even though it was pouring out - there was some seriously beautiful light coming in through the windows in my parents newly renovated (and mostly empty) second floor.
Not only did the photos come out beautifully, but it brought cousins back together.
